Effective Downy Mildew Management in Basil Using Resistant Varieties, Environment Modifications, and Fungicides

چکیده
Considerable progress has been made in managing Peronospora belbahrii, an oomycete pathogen that causes basil downy mildew, since 2007, when it was first detected the United States. Conventional fungicides have registered and shown effective against P. belbahrii replicated experiments recent years. Unfortunately, because of their specific modes action biology, some are at risk for resistance development, which documented outside Sweet varieties developed commercialized, with most exhibiting good to high levels mildew. Knowledge about conditions favorable infection disease development resulted identification cultural practices mildew greenhouse. Practices being implemented include fans move leaves, thus preventing water deposition decreasing relative humidity, lighting night mitigate sporulation, temperature modification suppress development. Although can be more effectively managed today, growers still experience losses, particularly highly None organic or programs tested provided adequate control susceptible varieties, limited testing done on resistant date. This review aims summarize management tools, particular mildew-resistant environment modifications, fungicide applications.

Expect and Prepare for Downy Mildew in Basil
Downy mildew of basil is a new, destructive disease that appears to be here to stay. It was first reported in south FL in October 2007. In 2008 downy mildew was confirmed in both fieldand greenhouse-grown basil crops, as well as home gardens, in many states: NC, PA, NJ, NY, MA, NC, KS, and MO. Likely it occurred elsewhere but was not recognized. Growers generally did not realize their basil had...
متن کاملNocturnal Fanning Suppresses Downy Mildew Epidemics in Sweet Basil
Downy mildew is currently the most serious disease of sweet basil around the world. The oomycete causal agent Peronospora belbahrii requires ≥ 4h free leaf moisture for infection and ≥7.5h of water-saturated atmosphere (relative humidity RH≥95%) at night for sporulation. We show here that continued nocturnal fanning (wind speed of 0.4-1.5 m/s) from 8pm to 8am dramatically suppressed downy milde...
متن کاملDaytime Solar Heating Controls Downy Mildew Peronospora belbahrii in Sweet Basil
The biotrophic oomycete Peronospora belbahrii causes a devastating downy mildew disease in sweet basil. Due to the lack of resistant cultivars current control measures rely heavily on fungicides. However, resistance to fungicides and strict regulation on their deployment greatly restrict their use. Here we report on a 'green' method to control this disease. Growth chamber studies showed that P....

This study was conducted to evaluate a new chemical, oxathiapiprolin, as a seed treatment and foliar application for control of downy mildew of basil, caused by Peronospora belbahrii, and to assess the in...
متن کاملEvaluation of fungicides for the control of downy mildew (Peronospora parasitica) in canola
Downy mildew, caused by Peronospora parasitica Pers. ex Fr., is an important disease of canola that has implications during early seedling establishment. The fungus invades young seedlings and severe infection results in premature defoliation. In worst cases, the systemic infection may even kill the seedlings. Current commercial varieties of canola are very susceptible to downy mildew. Therefor...
